If you follow us on social media, you’ll know our sheep are a big part of life at Townhead
Farm — from lambing season updates to the woolly inspiration behind our Jelly Legs gin.
But our flock doesn’t just keep us entertained online, they’re also helping to support more
sustainable gardening, thanks to one often-overlooked by-product: their fleece.
It’s one of the best natural tools we’ve found for improving soil health, deterring pests, and
helping your crops thrive, and we want more people to benefit from it.
So Why Use Sheep Fleece in the Garden?
Here on the farm, we’ve been using fleece in the greenhouse and veg beds for a few years now and we can honestly say we’ve never had such a successful growing season.
Here’s why:
It’s a natural slug and snail repellent.
Slugs and snails won’t crawl across the fibres, it’s soft and scratchy, and they don’t like it! That means no need for chemical pellets.
It suppresses weeds. Layer fleece around your plants to block out sunlight and stop unwanted weeds coming through, saving you time and effort.
It retains moisture. Fleece acts like a natural mulch, locking in water and preventing your soil from drying out during hot weather.
It feeds the soil. As it breaks down, fleece releases slow, natural nutrients into the soil acting as a gentle fertiliser without any synthetic additives.
It’s fully biodegradable. No plastic, no packaging, no artificial nonsense! The fleece naturally rots down over winter and can be dug back into the soil the following spring.
Available Now Straight From Our Townhead Flock
This isn’t a mass-produced product. It’s straight from our own Texel, Mule and Black faced
sheep, sheared here on the farm and sold unwashed and untreated to keep its natural
structure and goodness intact.
We’re offering fleece by the bag; ideal for everything from full veg patches to small
polytunnels. It’s exactly what we use ourselves, and we’re genuinely passionate about more people giving it a go.
Whether you’re growing tomatoes in pots or overhauling your greenhouse beds, this is a
simple, sustainable solution that works with the seasons and returns goodness to the soil for years to come.
How to Get Yours
You can pick up a bag from us at local markets, or drop us a message via social media to
reserve one. We’ve got a limited amount available, and once it’s gone, it’s gone - until next
shearing season.
If you’ve been looking for an eco-friendly way to boost your crops, beat the weeds, and ditch the slug pellets, we think you’ll love this as much as we do.
Thanks as always for supporting Townhead Farm. Whether it’s eggs, gin or good honest
fleece, we couldn’t do it without you.
